Pilate wouldn’t have needed much convincing to reach for the hammer and nails. A few of his disciples were probably paid-up members of the group, as (probably) were the two so-called thieves between whom he hung on the cross. He would certainly have knocked around with Zealots, the anticolonial revolutionaries of the day. Jesus may not have been a Lenin, but it might have suited the Jewish leaders to persuade Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, that he was. Holland might also have pointed out that the ancient Romans reserved crucifixion mostly for political rebels. If you really have to be nailed to a cross, the best thing to do is lose a lot of blood beforehand, so by scourging Jesus the Romans unwittingly helped him on his way. He describes crucifixion as one of the most terrible deaths one can suffer, which must be true in general but if Jesus really did only spend six hours on the cross, as the New Testament reports, he was luckier than most victims, who thrashed around for days. T om Holland’s Dominion recounts the history and impact of Christianity from the crucifixion of Jesus to the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love”.

The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. It took me a while to really get into the story, but once I was hooked, I found this true story to be extremely moving. Hunter follows Nechuma and Sol Kurc and their five grown children as they are separated by war, facing unimaginable atrocities, and yet eventually reuniting together. During World War 2, almost all of the Polish Jews were killed, but somehow the Kurc family were the lucky ones who all managed to survive. Georgia Hunter dives into her family history with the epic true story of the Kurc family. And of course, as I always say 'If a book makes you cry, it is a good book', therefore If I Stay is an excellent read and I would definitely recommend it to those who are looking for a sad yet completely different book. These are all crazy thoughts but I love a book that really makes me think about what I would do if I was in that particular situation. It really made me wonder what coma patients must be going through while there are in a coma, whether or not they actually know what is going on and whether or not they can decide to wake up. What I loved the most was the originality of it I mean, it takes real talent to really think outside the box like the author has. I have to admit, this story was immensely devastating but I loved it all the same. It’s a splendidly written story, full of humour, snappy dialogue and delicious sexual tension, and I’m pleased to say that I found the audio version just as enjoyable5.
